Chapter 8 Questions
How does what the doctor first says, foreshadow Johnny's condition?
What the doctor says is foreshadowing that Johnny is most likely not going to survive his injuries. When Ponyboy and Two-Bit went to go visit Johnny in the hospital, the nurses wouldn't let them see Johnny because he was in critical condition, but the doctor let them go see Johnny because his chances of survival were very small, and he wanted them to have a chance to say goodbye to their friend.
"We needed Johnny as much as he needed the gang. And for the same reason"What do you think Pony means, and what is the reason?
I think Ponyboy means that the Greasers needed Johnny the same way they needed him because Johnny needed them because his family was cruel and he had found a new family in this gang of Greasers. The other Greasers need Johnny as well because their lives at home weren't that great either. Since Johnny was so small, the other Greasers felt like it was their job to protect him since no one else would.
What does Pony mean when he says, "we could get along without anyone but Johnny"?
Pony means that the Greasers feel as if they need to protect someone, and that person is Johnny. If Johnny were to die, they wouldn't have anyone to protect other than themselves. In the beginning of the story, Johnny was compared to being a "kicked puppy", ever since he was jumped by a gang of Socs. He was so traumatized by that experience, that the Greasers are trying to protect him and make sure that that never happens again. Dally and Johnny were polar opposites but they were good buddies. If Johnny were to die, Dally wouldn't be that cool, rude, and tough Greaser that he was known for being, he would just be a mess because one of the only people that he had ever cared about was dead.
If Darry didn't have Soda and Pony, why would he be a soc?
If Darry didn't have Sodapop and Ponyboy,he would be a Soc because he would have gone to collage and would have made lots of money. Being a Soc basically means that you have a lot of money. Darry has to balance two jobs to support his brothers and himself. Darry was a good student in school and he was an amazing football player, so it wouldn't have been very hard to get into a good collage. But ever since their parents died in a car accident, Darry took their place to take care of his younger siblings, and he didn't have the time or money to go to collage. If he had went to collage he would have been a Soc because he would have had a lot more money
What does Cherry mean when she says Bob "wasn't just anyone"
When Cherry said that Bob "wasn't just anyone" she meant that he was someone special, because they were dating. She felt that he great qualities, except when he was drinking, and that was when Ponyboy and Johnny had faced him. Pony asked her if she was going to go visit Johnny in the hospital, but she said she couldn't look at the person who had killed Bob. She understands that he was trying to defend himself, but she still doesn't want to see him. She thought that Bob was such a great person when he wasn't drinking, and that he was like nobody else that she knew.
