Plot
Chapter 1- Ponyboy is walking home from a movie that he went to see by himself. Out of nowhere, three Socs come at him, and attack him. The other Greasers scare off Ponyboy's attackers, and try to comfort him. Each Greaser is being introduced when this is happening. When Ponyboy, Sodapop, and Darry go home, Sodapop and Ponyboy have a nice conversation before drifting off to sleep.
Chapter 2- The Greasers go to the Drive in, and they see two girls. Dally walks over to them and starts bugging them. They try not to react, but after a while give up and try telling him to stop. Ponyboy and Johnny end up watching the movie with the two girls, and find out that they are Socs, and that their names are Cherry and Marcia. Ponyboy an Cherry go to get some snacks, when Ponyboy tells Cherry about when the Socs attacked Johnny.
Chapter 3- Cherry, Marcia, and some of the Greasers are on their way walking home from the drive in, when a blue mustang drives by to pick up Cherry and Marcia. Johnny pales when he realizes that these were the Socs the nearly killed him. Later that night, Johnny and Ponyboy find a field and the end up falling asleep there. Johnny shakes Ponyboy awake and Ponyboy runs home realizing that it was probably past midnight, which was when he was supposed to be home. He walks through the door, and Darry starts yelling at him that it was two in the morning and that he was worried about him, an Sodapop tells Darry to stop yelling at Ponyboy, an then Darry slaps Ponyboy right in the face. Ponyboy is startled, then runs out the door, sprinting down the street, crying. He runs back into Johnny and Johnny tries to calm him down, and when Ponyboy feels like he is calm enough, he can go back home.
Chapter 4- Johnny and Ponyboy are attacked by drunk Socs, and one of them tries to drown Ponyboy in a fountain. Johnny then stabs the Soc forcing Ponyboy under the water, and the rest of the Socs run away. While Ponyboy is lying on the ground coughing up water and gasping for air, Johnny is sitting next to him saying "I killed him. I killed that boy." Ponyboy and Johnny then go find Dally, because he has been in trouble with the law a lot, so they ask him what they should do because they just murdered someone. Dally gives them warm clothes and a gun, and they head out. They follow Dally's directions an take a train to where they need to be. Ponyboy uses Johnny's legs as a pillow and falls asleep. When he wakes up, Johnny tells him it's almost their stop and they jump off. Johnny almost falls because his legs have fallen asleep because Ponyboy was sleeping on them. They ask a man for directions and then they make it to the church that Dally told them to go to.
Chapter 5- Ponyboy is asked by Johnny to cut his hair an bleach it so they can disguise themselves from the police. Then Johnny asks Ponyboy to cut his hair, but he wouldn't be able to bleach it because his hair is too dark. Ponyboy is a little bit hesitant to cut his hair because he thinks that his hair is what makes him a Greaser. The boys follow Dally's instructions and stay inside the church and pass the time by playing cards and reading from a book called 'Gone with the Wind'. Then Dally shows up and takes them to Dairy Queen, where they eat a whole lot of food, and Dally tells them all of the things that have been happening back home while they have been gone.
Chapter 6- Dally tells Ponyboy and Johnny about how Cherry became a spy for the Greasers. Driving home from Dairy Queen they see that the church was on fire, and that a giant group of people re standing in front of it. When they get there, they ask an adult who was in crowd what happened, and if there were any people still inside. The man says that there were still a whole bunch of people inside the building. Johnny and Ponyboy realize quickly that they have to save the kids. They go through the front door and find the kids and help them crawl out of the window. When Dally realizes that the building will come tumbling down any second, he goes and helps Pony out of the window, and then he tries to help Johnny. Pony blacks out, and wakes up in an ambulance. When he gets to the hospital he finds his older brothers waiting for him, and he runs up and hugs them both. Even Darry who had slapped Pony cross the face the last time he saw him. Then the doctors tell him that Darry just got burns on his right arm, and the will be scars there for the rest of his life, but he should have his arm moving by the end of the month. However, Johnny was in critical condition, and has a broken back, and burns all over his body, and Pony realizes that if Johnny does recover, he will be crippled, and won't be able to do the things he used to do.
